Because there are so many different types of bearings in use for specific applications, it is extremely difficult to establish a base failure rate for an individual bearing design based on field performance data. In addition to the problem of locating failure rate data for an individual type of bearing, bearing analysis is also extremely difficult due to the large number of engineering parameters related to bearing design such as size, material properties, rigidity, design complexity, type of lubrication and load capacity. Fortunately, bearings are among the few components designed for a finite life. Because of the fatigue properties of the materials used, some bearings are assigned a L-io life, which is the number of revolutions at a given load that 90 percent of a set of apparently identical bearings will complete or exceed before failure.
