With the exception of clutch friction linings, these component parts are addressed in other chapters of this handbook. The general characteristics of friction materials are addressed in Section 12.2. Those characteristics of friction materials peculiar to clutches will be discussed in the following paragraphs. The principal function of a friction clutch is to convert kinetic energy to heat and then either to absorb or otherwise dissipate the heat while simultaneously, through friction, reducing the relative movement between the friction material and the part to which it is engaged.
